Herbal Tea vs Fruit-Flavoured Tea: What Are You Buying?

Herbal Tea vs Fruit-Flavoured Tea: What Are You Buying?

Herbal tea and fruit-flavoured tea are broad descriptions, not complete ingredient lists. A product might contain leaves, flower ingredients, fruit pieces, flavourings or a combination. The useful comparison begins on the back of the packet rather than with the picture on the front.

Ingredient names tell different stories

An ingredient named after a fruit-bearing plant may use its leaves instead of its fruit. Likewise, a fruit-flavoured drink need not contain a large quantity of the fruit pictured. Read the full list and the product description together before deciding what flavour or format you expect.

Look beyond a familiar name

If you are comparing two packets, write down their named ingredients and whether each is a single ingredient or a blend. Do not use colour or sweetness alone to decide what is in the drink. Added ingredients can change the experience without changing the main name on the packet.

Choose for your own preferences

Someone looking for a leaf infusion may want a different product from someone expecting a sweet fruit-style drink. Neither description automatically tells you which you will prefer. Start with clear ingredients, prepare as directed and describe what you actually taste rather than relying on the product photograph.
