Comparing herbal tea prices becomes clearer when you look at the number of servings as well as the packet price. A cheaper packet may contain fewer tea bags, while a larger one may cost less per bag without fitting your preferences. A simple cost-per-cup calculation helps you see the difference without deciding that price is the only important factor.
Begin with information from the current product pages or the packets you are considering. Check the quantity, preparation directions and whether you are comparing like with like. A gift set, a loose ingredient and a packet of tea bags are different products even when they contain related ingredients.
Start with the price per tea bag
Divide the packet price by the number of bags. For an entirely hypothetical example, a £6 packet containing 15 bags costs 40p per bag. An £8 packet containing 20 bags also costs 40p per bag, despite the higher price on the shelf.
These figures are examples, not current K&M prices. Use the prices and quantities shown when you shop. Writing the calculation down can prevent a larger number on the packet from looking automatically more expensive or a smaller packet from looking automatically better value.
Check what counts as one serving
A cost per bag becomes a cost per cup only when your preparation uses one bag for that cup. Read the product instructions and think about your usual water quantity. If you routinely use two bags in a large mug, your serving cost is different.
Do not assume you can stretch every bag across several full servings. Reusing a bag or adding extra water may change the flavour and may not match the preparation directions. Base the comparison on the way you can reasonably expect to enjoy the product.
Keep different product formats separate
Loose ingredients may be sold by weight rather than by a fixed bag count. You would need the recommended quantity per serving to make a meaningful comparison. A larger weight alone does not tell you how many cups the packet will provide.
Gift sets may include a box, cups, a teapot or several products. Dividing the whole gift price by the number of tea bags can give a misleading picture of what you are buying. Compare tea-only costs separately from the value you place on the equipment or presentation.
Decide whether delivery belongs in the calculation
For an online order, delivery affects what you pay in total. If you are comparing two whole orders, include the relevant delivery charges for each. Use the current checkout information, especially where charges depend on the number of items or destination.
Be clear about the question you are answering. The tea's packet cost per serving and the delivered order cost per serving are both useful, but they are different figures. Label them so you do not accidentally compare one shop's delivered total with another shop's product price alone.
Think about how much you will actually use
A larger packet is not necessarily better value if you are unsure you like the ingredient. A smaller initial purchase may be a sensible way to try something new, even if its unit price is higher. Consider preference and storage alongside the arithmetic.
If several people share the tea, a larger quantity may fit your routine. If you drink it occasionally, check the product's storage and date information before buying more. Value comes from a product you use and enjoy, rather than from the lowest number in a calculation.
Use the result to make a considered choice
Write down the packet price, quantity and expected servings, then compare your final figures. Add a note if delivery or accessories are included. That small amount of structure makes the decision easier to revisit when prices or your shopping list change.
Cost per cup is a useful comparison tool, not a judgement of quality or taste. Combine it with clear ingredient information and your own preferences. The best purchase for your cupboard should make sense both as a drink and as part of your budget.
