Who Was Catherine of Braganza, and Why Is She Linked with Tea?

Catherine of Braganza was the Portuguese princess who married Charles II in 1662. She is linked with tea because her preference helped make the drink fashionable at the English court. That influence is different from saying she was the first person to bring tea to Britain.

What the popular story gets right

Catherine grew up in a court where tea was already appreciated. When she came to England, she continued drinking it. A royal household could set fashions, and a drink associated with the queen attracted attention beyond her own table.

Her story shows how an influential person can help change the image of a product already known to a smaller audience. Tea did not need to be entirely new for her example to matter.

What needs correcting

Tea was known in Britain before her marriage. Samuel Pepys recorded trying it in 1660, for example. Calling Catherine the person who introduced tea erases that earlier evidence and makes a complicated trading history sound too simple.

It also skips the long tea cultures that existed elsewhere before tea became fashionable in England. A British royal connection is one chapter, not the opening chapter of tea itself.

A story for your next tea gathering

You could make a small history card for an afternoon tea: one side with the familiar claim, the other explaining the distinction between introduction and popularisation. It gives guests something to discuss without requiring a lecture.

If your table includes herbal infusions, label them separately. Catherine's association concerns tea in its historical context; it does not establish a royal connection for every plant-based drink served today. Enjoy the story while keeping those different threads clear.
