A lid can be useful while herbal tea brews, particularly when you are preparing a pot for several people. It helps the drink retain warmth during the waiting time. Follow any preparation advice on your packet first; covering a cup does not replace using the right quantity or brewing time.

What can you use?
A teapot’s own lid is the simplest option. For a mug, use a clean cover designed to fit it safely. Avoid balancing something heavy or unstable over a cup of hot water. Leave enough space to remove the lid and the tea bag without spills.
Keep the comparison fair
If you want to compare covered and uncovered brewing, use the same tea, water quantity and steeping time. Taste both at a comfortable temperature. Changing the bag quantity as well would make it difficult to know what caused the difference.
What a lid does not solve
It will not correct an unsuitable brewing method or turn an ingredient into a different flavour. A covered cup can still become stronger than you like if you leave the bag in longer than instructed. Set a timer and remove the tea when the recommended steep is complete.
