Tea Strainer vs Tea Infuser: Which Do You Need?

Tea Strainer vs Tea Infuser: Which Do You Need?

A tea infuser holds loose ingredients while they brew. A tea strainer catches loose pieces when the finished drink is poured. They can look similar, but their place in your tea routine is different.

Where the ingredients sit

A basket infuser can sit inside a cup or teapot and be lifted out after the recommended brewing time. With a separate strainer, ingredients may brew in the pot and be caught as you pour. The teapot's design determines which arrangement is practical.

Match the accessory to your tea

A tea bag already keeps its contents together, so it does not automatically require either accessory. For loose ingredients, check the size of the openings and the space inside the basket. Fine particles may pass through a coarse strainer, while an awkwardly small basket can be difficult to use.

Check fit and cleaning

Measure the cup or pot opening before buying a separate accessory. Check whether a lid still fits, whether the handle can be lifted comfortably and how the item should be cleaned. An accessory is useful when it suits the equipment you already own, not simply because it appears in a tea photograph.
