Why Does Herbal Tea Taste Different Without Sugar?

Why Does Herbal Tea Taste Different Without Sugar?

Sugar changes the finished drink, so a sweetened cup and an unsweetened cup are not identical tasting experiences. If you want to understand a herbal tea's flavour, it helps to keep track of what you add.

Try one preparation at a time

Prepare the tea using the packet directions and allow it to reach a comfortable drinking temperature. If you normally sweeten it, compare a small taste before and after your usual addition. This is a flavour exercise, not a rule about how everyone should drink tea.

Keep your comparisons fair

Different brewing times, water amounts and ingredients can also change the cup. When several things change at once, it is harder to know what you preferred. Use the same product and preparation for your first comparison, then record any additions in plain language.

There is no required favourite

Some people enjoy a plain infusion; others prefer an addition. Your notes might mention aroma, tartness, a leafy character or how the drink feels to you. Those observations are personal preferences. They do not establish that one version has special health effects or is right for another person.
