Water is part of every cup, so its own taste is worth noticing when a familiar tea seems different. Before changing the tea, consider whether the water source, kettle or preparation has changed too.
Notice the starting water
Compare the taste of your drinking water separately from the infusion. A different water source can make the whole drinking experience feel different, but that does not mean a particular bottled or filtered water is essential. Use water suitable for drinking and follow the product's preparation instructions.
Check the equipment too
A kettle or cup that needs cleaning can complicate a flavour comparison. Maintain equipment according to its manufacturer's directions. Avoid changing the water, brewing time and number of bags together if you are trying to understand why one cup tastes unlike the last.
Make useful tasting notes
Record the tea name, water source, amount and brewing time. A short note such as 'same tea, different water' is more useful than deciding immediately that the packet has changed. Keep your preferred routine simple enough to repeat when you find a cup you enjoy.
