Can herbal tea go off? Start with the date and storage instructions on the packet. A best-before date and a use-by date communicate different things, and no single shelf life applies to every herbal tea.

What does best before mean?
Government food-labelling guidance distinguishes best-before dates, which concern quality, from use-by dates, which concern safety. The actual wording on your product matters. A general article cannot replace the label or tell you the condition of a particular packet.
Why the packaging matters
Tea arrives in different formats: sealed portions, loose ingredients and packets opened repeatedly. The supplier’s instructions explain the intended storage. Keeping that information with the tea is especially useful if you transfer packets into a decorative tin or arrange them in a gift box.
Aroma is not a safety test
A familiar fragrance does not establish that a product has been stored correctly. Equally, a less intense aroma is not enough to assign a new expiry date. The label and the condition of the packaging provide context that a quick smell cannot supply on its own.
Check before building a collection
When buying several teas, look at the individual dates rather than assuming every packet has the same shelf life. Keep older and newer purchases identifiable. K&M product pages are a starting point for choosing a tea; the supplied packet remains the reference for its instructions.
