How to store herbal tea starts with the directions on the packet. Good organisation also helps you keep ingredients, brewing advice and date information easy to find.
Keep the packet closed
Reseal the packaging properly after use. If a packet cannot be closed securely, put the whole labelled packet inside a suitable clean, dry container. This keeps the original information with the tea instead of creating a mystery jar.
Choose a sensible cupboard
Follow the storage instructions supplied with your tea. A dry place away from steam, direct sunlight and sources of heat is usually a practical choice for dried tea. Avoid a shelf directly above the kettle or cooker, where conditions can change each time you cook.
Keep strong smells separate
Tea can pick up surrounding aromas. Store it away from strongly scented spices and household cleaning products. Keep each variety in its own closed packaging rather than placing several open packets together.
Use the dates and labels
Check the date information and rotate packets so older purchases are easy to see. Follow any instructions about use after opening. If the contents become damp or show signs of deterioration, do not use them. A small, organised selection is easier to manage than forgotten packets at the back of a cupboard.
